Is Insulin Causing Your Hormonal Imbalances? - Take Quiz

Are you getting enough of Vitamin D? What you need to know before we go into cold and flu season

Winter is soon approaching. The days are getting shorter and many of us are finding it hard to get outdoors and get our dose of the sunshine vitamin.

If you live above the 37th parallel, basically above Florida, you won’t be able to get adequate sunshine to make vitamin D. Between 70-90% of Canadians are deficient in vitamin D! (Pubmed, April 2021).

As we saw during the Covid-19 pandemic, vitamin D played a huge role in regulating the immune system. One study showed that 80% of 200 Covid patients at a hospital in Spain were deficient in Vitamin D, and this was also linked to higher inflammatory markers, which we know lead to an increased risk for chronic diseases. Vitamin D is crucial for proper thyroid functioning. Low levels have been linked to anxiety and depression, metabolic issues, bone loss, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory diseases, as well as many cancers.

Increasing your consumption of fatty fish, such as wild-caught salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines and anchovies can increase your vitamin D. Supplementing with essential fish oils and vitamin D can also go a long way to ensure you are meeting the requirements your body needs to stay healthy.
